Houston to Let's Plan to Win

We are beginning a new chapter in a new year and believe it or not many local artists are still riding the wave from 2014's marginal victories. While this may sound like a solid plan for the new calendar year it can be heartbreaking for the suits and ties who exclaim that "you're only as good as your last hit." Over the years the Houston music scene has had its share of successful runs where a standout talent has emerged and capitalized from the push of a hot single but, very few have actually managed to sustain longevity. Although talent and hard work go hand in hand neither supersedes an artist having an actual plan for their music career. I'm here for the long and restless nights of tracking and recording in the studio, but then what? What do you plan to do with the finished product? Most artists are too busy focusing on the creative aspect of their craft that they tend to overlook the business aspect. Resulting in a solid 6 track EP that nobody heard because you invested most of your time selecting artwork or tweeting through it. It's very important that in 2015 local artist take a different approach to growth and become more business savvy, after all it is the music business. I know what you're thinking becoming more business savvy sounds expensive and you're right but it takes money to make money.
However, investing in a quality and knowledgeable team can set you apart from your peers. Once you have a team in place create a plan. Thanks to the internet we now have several cost effective systems and applications that make marketing a product simple. As your career advances you'll realize how important it is to utilize your resources when you see your marketing budget from the label. One of my secrets to planning ahead is breaking the year down by quarter and listing ideas and/or goals that I want to accomplish during the time frame. Putting thoughts on paper is a good way to hold yourself and team accountable throughout the year. There is a method to my madness and here are four tips as a parting gift to prepare you for the takeover.
  • Goal Oriented- Set realistic short-term and long-term goals per release or special project.
  • Don't Procrastinate- Time waits for no man. Creative works need to be seen and heard.
  • Trump Competition- Your only competitors should be yourself and yesterday.
  • Be Great- Greatness requires consistency.

A year from now you'll likely forget this post and that's fine..... but remember a year from now we'll see who was really working.

Review: The Gift of Discernment

The A's newest and possibly truest trap aficionado, Alley Boy is back with a follow up to his 1st quarter release Nigganati with the mixtape entitled The Gift of Discernment.  The Empire presents,The Gift of Discernment which was released on September 18, stacked with 18 tracks featuring a crop of new hungry producers and artist. While Nigganati was made for a society of people who have been cast out or discriminated against Alley Boy's The Gift of Discernment is about separating the real from the fake.

The mixtapes' intro borrows excerpts from the now classic radio interview of the late trill Chad "Pimp C" Butler. Alley Boy further pays homage to a few southern hip-hop generals in Scarface, Eight Ball & MJG who have been recognized as some of the realest of the art form. As Pimp C's rant fades out over the backbeat the projects first single "Your Favorite Rapper" featuring G.O.O.D music's Pusha T fades in. Alley Boy who has been known to speak his mind about his fellow industry counterparts doesn't miss an opportunity to remind us of his theory repeatedly in the hook "Your favorite rapper's a damn lie". Mix in Pusha T and you have a high energy song that will surely offend your favorite rapper. “I Live This Shit” produced and features the underground’s acclaimed King, Big K.R.I.T who sounds off with a cocky hook over rhythmic bass tones.

However, The Gift of Discernment has a little something for everyone the ladies of course can practice their best twerk routine to songs like “Circles”, “Tattoo”, and “Cream”. Alley Boy slows it down and elevates his content on songs like “Tongue Powerful” and “All For You’ which is a derivative of Lana Del Rey’s seductive ballad “Video Games” produced by Cool & Dre. If you beez in the trap you might identify with “Graduated” or “ All My Life” which features Duct Tape Entertainment Label mate, Trouble. In the song “Apartments” Alley Boy depicts how real it can get in the streets, “Road blocks at the top, and dogs on every block.”As he states in the first verse “only the strongest survive” and the same can be said about the music industry ironically. The music industry is similar in the fact that it is known for harboring shady individuals. Alley Boy’s cover art for The Gift of Discernment is a reminder to beware of wolves dressed in sheep’s clothing. One who possesses the gift of discernment has the ability to distinguish between the spirit of truth and error and holiness and evil as referenced in the book of Corinthians. We asked Alley Boy what was one thing he wanted listeners to remember about this project he exclaimed, “Stand out by all cost, and watch with your third eye”. We will be watching out for what Alley Boy has in store for the rest of the 4th quarter.

For more information on Alley Boy visit www.alleyboy.com or follow him on Twitter @alleyboydte and download The Gift of Discernment via Live Mixtapes today! Watch Alley Boy's official video ft Pusha T " Your Favorite Rapper" below.

WesCoas'n: Styles Davis If Miles Could Talk Review

Wes Coas, the California born and bred MC recently released his 4th studio album entitled Styles Davis: If Miles Could Talk which loosely pays homage to the legacy of the late great jazz musician Miles Davis. The project is a collection of 11 sundry tracks that intend to solidify Wes Coas as more than just a West Coast rapper. The mash-up of conscious hip-hop and egocentric undertones fused between the album is a good way to please a new generation of music lovers. The album begins with an Intro “If Miles could talk he’ll tell you where I last been, and tell you bout’ my last sin.” One can only imagine where he has been as Miles Davis had his share of troubles throughout his career battling the sins that come along with the fame and fortune of the industry.
However, Wes Coas does a great job of being a relatable rapper unlike many today who are focused on pushing their million dollar cars, homes, and overly expensive liqueurs down our throats. "In making this album I wanted it to be a voice to the people and let them know that someone else is walking that distance with you. A lot of times as artist with music we continuously put these ideas out but don't have any substance behind them. This album is about controlling your own destiny, questioning yourself, as well as enjoying life.” Previous projects such as Manifest Destiny also encourage listeners to better themselves and their future. I've always made music to inspire, but this time it was about inspiring a feeling “says Wes Coas. The track “Celebrate” produced by Best Kept Secret does a good job balancing the album’s subject matter with its feel good vibe and Tony, Toni, Tone sampled melodies. The current single “When I Knew” is a stand out as it is also Wes Coas’ current single. Many of the tracks on Styles Davis: If Miles Could Talk allow you to identify with Wes Coas the artist.
Wes Coas has continued to grow his fan base over the past few years participating and headlining shows across the coast and as far as Osaka, Japan where he was actually nominated for Performer of the Year at the Kansai Music Conference. Wes Coas has been living in Houston, Texas since after he graduated high school and has found a way to elevate his Californication in the Land of the Trill touching as many people as he can with his craft. You can hear a few Texasisms’ sporadically throughout the project however it may be hard for some to decipher. Although many artists have been slammed by Texas natives in regards to the heavy use of screw and chopped music, Wes Coas is staying in his own lane and bringing a touch of the West to the South. Just like Miles Davis, Wes Coas assures his supporters that he will continue to put out quality music that will influence a generation to be great or simply just live life to the fullest.

You can find more information about Wes Coas upcoming appearances and releases by visiting www.wescoas.com or follow him on twitter at www.twitter.com/wecoas make sure you download the album Styles Davis: If Miles Could Talk at http://www.stylesdavisep.com

Keeping Up With the Jonzieeee

We recently caught up with Mookie Jones as the smooth and well-versed Houston rapper prepares to release his latest project entitled Mack to find out what it really takes to keep up with the Jonzieeee’s. After sustaining a buzz with his last release P.A.N (Playa Ass Nigga) Mookie Jones continually kept busy by linking with some of the most notable names in the underground with rappers like Jackie Chan, Smoke DZA, and 3rd Coast comrades Killa Kyleon and Big K.R.I.T. When asked how he sees himself either standing out or fitting in with the coined “Texas sound” Mookie replied, “Texas is the home of the playas and pimps; I stand in but I’m outstanding.” Spoken like a true playa Mookie Jones’ precise selection of syncopated yet harmonious beats sets the stage for the August 14th release Mack.  After building a working relationship with Taylor Gang’s go-to producer Cardo, Mookie sought him out to produce the project which was originally suppose to be a 6-8 track EP. The project grew organically after DJ Burn One grew fond of what Mookie had done with a previous recording and continued to send him more music and just like that Mack was born.
Linking with producers who he felt could capture his cool and match his sound sonically was the ultimate goal for the project. A continuation of underline themes carried over from Mookie’s 2010 release Tuskegee Vol. 1  can be found in tracks like “When I Want” featuring Harlem general, Smoke DZA in which Mookie boast about being able to have any woman he chooses at first listen. If you don’t listen closely you might just miss out on Mack’n 101. Mookie Jones spits the art of pimping from his point of view and hopes that both new and old fans will uncover the top layer and see that his music possesses more depth than the contrary. Mack also bears features from Le$, Big Sant, and SL Jones.  “Don’t judge or get caught up in what I’m rapping about; it’s the game that I’m giving.” In the recent leak “Poetry Vision” featuring Max Julien, Sir Autoo professes “a goal without a plan is just a wish” which Mookie borrowed from his momager. “You have to have a skeleton in place to get the body moving; you can’t just freestyle your life in anything you do, an entry and exit plan is necessary. The only way to dream is dream big.” Yes, Mookie Jones is a pimp, playa, and all of the above but he promises this time around his music will resonate on a visual level with his fans. “My music allows my fans to live life through me. If they’ve never been to the strip club I take them to experience it.” Although Mookie Jones is an avid strip club patron at night his daily routine is pretty normal for a rapper.
Mookie Jones’ day usually begins with some of the finest OG and him simultaneously checking his email and social media accounts. Music being the main focus he either writes to new beats he’s received or works on new music. Mookie spends the rest of the day running errands, helping friends, handling business with his management, and chauffeuring and supervising the daily activities of his “female friends” as he likes to call them. The day is not complete without hitting the studio since Mookie is constantly writing he needs to somewhere to record the sermon. “The studio is a special place, I love recording, “said Mookie Jones. Mookie shared with us that he already has 3 projects completed with the next release to be entitled Jonizeeee. He is also in the process of helping his sister, Perry Jones who was featured on a couple of tracks from the Tuskegee Vol.1 release including the track “Black Hole” write music for her upcoming project. Mookie loves being in the studio however performing his music for his fans is his passion. “I love rocking my songs on stage it’s where I let the sermon out,” proclaims Mookie.  He got to do just that as Mookie Jones recently joined the Texas leg of the infamous Smoker’s Club Tour. Balancing tour life and the release of a new project can be a hectic but Mookie Jones and the empire are up for the task. Similar to the 70’s blaxploitation film the Mack has the ingredients required of a classic. Cause after all “A pimp is only as good as his product.”

Mack is available for download beginning tomorrow August 14th and can be found at www.jonzieeee.com #autoooo To stay updated with upcoming projects and shows follow Mookie Jones on twitter @Mookie_Jones

2011: Through the Eyes of Twitter

This year was filled with tumultuous moments to say the least. We witnessed some events in pop culture that will leave lasting memories throughout this decade. It wasn’t hard to stay current with the best and worst moments of 2011 if you had an active account on any social network, primarily Twitter. Twitter, a mobile social networking site originally created to rival Facebook in 2006 and to keep a group of friends connected through SMS messages. Throughout the years of existence and the introduction to the masses we have seen the site grow with over 300 million users. It has become the hub of communication for news media, business owners, celebrities, and for everyday people like you and me.
Through 140 characters we have been exposed to the miracles of Photoshop, death, divorce, beef, and a host of unwarranted music links. Users of the site also united to aid in charitable donations via RT, aid in the discovery of missing persons, and expressed their condolences during losses of public figures. Twitter is a form of entertainment in its own right. On any given day in 2011 a celebrity was killed off, relationships were tested, and sexual preferences were challenged. While some used the site to pass time at work, create a false identity, and practice idolatry (celebrities) many actually used the site to create awareness for their business or cause. Let’s face it 2011 was filled with unforgettable moments and we all jumped on Twitter to share our thoughts about each one. Who can forget the hash tag that changed the dynamics of Twitter #winning thanks to Charlie Sheen and his outlandish outburst after being booted from the hit show ,”Two and Half Men” everyone began to overly exude how they were winning. TweetTV, became a staple for award shows and reality TV programs in 2011. When production and television companies got wind of how users on Twitter were engaging in dialect about their show they had no other choice but to incorporate it in programming (Hence twitter chats and trending topics). When Beyonce announced her hip-hop royal bun in the oven she broke Twitter records with most tweets per second.
There were also moments of controversy with the reminder of how inconsistent our judicial system is when the verdict for Casey Anthony was read many took to their Twitter page to express how they disagreed with the non-guilty verdict. The same feelings resonated with the execution of Troy Davis. Petitions to try and stop the execution were floating on many threads however it wasn’t enough to save the life of Troy Davis. In the sports world both the NFL and NBA lockouts were trending topics in which many voiced their opinions of what commissioners Roger Goddell and David Stern should do. While many users were tortured with tweets of possible mixtape releases and tweets period from unemployed athletes. In 2011 Americans were restored with hope of love through the union of the young British couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton. Too bad that hope dwindled when attention-seeking reality whore Kim Kardashian announced her marriage and divorce via twitter. The 72 day marriage sparked the trend #ThingsLongerThanKimKMarriage.
Recently, visionary and businessman Steve Jobs passed away in which many people took to their twitter accounts to share just how important his contribution was to the digital age and the advancement of technology. Through the eyes of Twitter the year of 2011 was no short of comical, invigorating, and inspiring. With 2012 just around the corner we can only hold on to the memories and anticipate what 2012 will be like.

Notable Moments of 2011:
• Oprah ends the Oprah Show and starts the OWN network
• The Death of Osama Bin Laden
• Conrad Murray verdict
• Death of Amy Winehouse
• Death of Hip-Hop Legend Heavy D
• Scandals: Bishop Eddie Long and Jerry Sandusky
• Kat Stacks
• Gucci Mane ice cream face tattoo
• Justin Beiber, Baby Daddy?

Super Bow XLV:Texas Edition 2011

On any given weekend in the city of Dallas,TX you can find a host of beautiful socialites, prominent business owners, and athletes out -n- about on the town however this upcoming weekend will be far from the ordinary. Super Bowl XLV will take place in the metropolis of Dallas,TX February 2-6,2011. "America's Team" will play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers in the one-of-a kind, stadium complex that is Cowboys Stadium (Arlington, TX). Last year, the city hosted the NBA All-Star Weekend and well lets say weather was a big factor in the way the events turned out. So fast forward to present day and you have the people of Dallas and the surrounding cities prepping overtime to ensure this year's events live  up to the Texan motto that ,"Everything is Bigger and Better in Texas". More parties, people, concerts, and  events throughout the entire weekend will keep the city streets busy. Over 150-250k people expected to participate in Super Bowl weekend traveling from all across the country to either spectate or participate. I say this because most people don't go to Super Bowl to attend the game, let's be honest not most can afford a ticket ranging from $2,000- 15,000 depending on the seat. Majority of attendees usually include sports lovers, professional athletes, entertainment professionals, artist, business men, strippers, and groupies( both male and female). Many will spend their rent money, tax return, or take a title loan out just for a chance to rub elbows with some of the hottest sports and entertainment stars. Here are a few tips and events to at least get you to the parking lot the rest is up to you.

Tips for SuperBowl:
  • Don't Underestimate Time-  Early arrival suggested everywhere, especially if you didn't bother to purchase a pre-sell ticket
  • Listen Carefully- Don't believe everything you hear this weekend. You will meet alot of doctors, rappers, managers, agents, and models.
  • Do I Know You- If you haven't communicated with your friend "with the hookup" in months don't expect to get hooked up this weekend.
  • Last-Minute- Still looking for a place to lay your head try the cities of Carrollton, Ft. Worth, and Denton.
  • Deep Pockets- Event prices range from $50-1,500 so you must come with paper. Anything less than balling is unacceptable unless you are the exception I mentioned above.
  • Non-Thirsty Weekend- Please leave your thirst at home. Like your mama would say act like you've been somewhere.
  • Beware of Groupies- They come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and gender. Anybody looking to be around for all the wrong reasons may qualify.
Here are a list of events taking place throughout the weekend most for kicks and some for a good cause:

MLK DAY Celebrate the LIFE.PURPOSE.DREAM

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day many people have the day off but forget the purpose. Martin Luther King's life purpose was to ensure equality and opportunity amongst all races. I have a dream was the speech, many can quote it but putting action and passion behind those words made them memorable. If Martin Luther King would be alive do you think he would be proud of the state of our nation. He never got to see his dream carried out, but the people elected our first african-american President which demonstrated that in fact we have come far. However, recent events not only within the african-american community exemplify that we still have a way to go. Hatred and violence is crippling our nation Martin Luther King believed that the only way to overcome hatred was to oppress hate with love. I encourage you to take this day off to either help someone move one step closer to their dream or just simply, LOVE.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from a wise man:

"Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase"- Martin Luther King Jr.

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter"- Marting Luther King Jr.

"I submit to you that if a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live"- Martin Luther King Jr.

Hip-Hop Hair Chronicles

Ok so I don’t know about you but for the past few months of I’ve been seeing a lot of peculiar hairstyles out and about. It seems that a lot of black women in particular are changing their hairstyles frequently and spending more money than ever before on them. On average a regular relaxer and style can start anywhere from $50 on the latter end to $100. While times have definitely changed I do think it’s important for all women to care about their upkeep and hair is one of the most important factors. A well groomed coif can make the difference in a woman’s entire day; the phrase “bad hair day” sometime can get all too literal. Women have been going the extra mile to keep up with what styles are considered to be hot and trendy. Celebrities tend to have an influence on this type of behavior, because the average woman sees images of this admired celebrity and want to be more like them. Just a SN: Three out of five women reading this right now might be guilty of one of the hairstyles mentioned in this blog. One thing for sure the hip-hop culture has a big influence in the hairstyles women choose to wear.

Leather Back:

The epidemic of lace fronts can be attributed to celebrities like Beyonce, Lil Kim, Trina, and Ciara. Although I love all these ladies they should have known that this one little piece of glue would cause such a commotion. Lace fronts are everywhere you turn now. Or is it just me? I mean first they were on the red carpet and now they are on the street corner. When you don't have it, buy it. That's the philosophy of many of today's celebrities who want impossibly thick/straight/wavy/curly hair and have the money to spend top dollar on a lace front wig. There is a catch 22 with buying a lace front; it is only a hairpiece not a miracle worker. The lace front should come with a disclaimer: Not guaranteed to improve your looks. Some people need to take a closer look in the mirror because what works for some doesn’t work for all. Not trying to be harsh, however it’s not proven but I think there could be permanent stretching of the forehead after use. Even the celebrities have taken the lace front epidemic to another level having a race to see whose baby hair can grow to their eyebrows that fastest is just ridiculous. R&B and newly found reality star diva, Brandy has a cool lead in the race after her lace front became one of the top trending topics on Twitter the evening her show Ray J and Brandy: A Family Business premiered on VH1.

Bang Attack:

Another style that has my forehead itching has been the Big Bang. The bang is back better than ever and taking over foreheads across America. Most women are now buying some type of Indian Remy or Virgin Remy hair and can usually range in price from $49- 189 a pack. This hair may seem overly expensive but like most say you get what you pay for and the hair does have a better texture and quality. The hair can be sew-in or glued in but most people I see are rocking the sharp Chinese bang style. This style has been a big part of Nicki Minaj’s image and she has marketed it very well because more and more bangs keep appearing. Nicki usually sports a jet black bang but has recently been seen wearing pink and green wigs that also have bangs. Another person known for their bangs is Kat Stacks, the retarded version of Superhead. She has released multiple videos on WSHH discussing her sexual affairs with many rappers in the industry. Her bangs were a big distraction when watching the video because they just seemed like they have a mind of their own and you kinda wonder what they do next. lol. Her bangs have gotten so popular that they even have their own twitter page @katstacksbangs.

Bald Chronicles:

When I think about this style I am at a loss for words because parting is such sweet sorrow. I just don’t understand why a woman would want to cut her hair bald. Just recently I hit the streets of Houston and saw the phrase “with your bald-headed ass” come to life. A lot of women are rockin the bald look and I don’t blame them less maintenance. R&Bsinger,Cassie was recently in the headlines for shaving half of her head. However, head shape should be a deciding factor in considering whether or not to chop it off. Britney Spears hair still hasn’t recovered from her bald mayhem now Solange has also gone bald. There should be a contest for who wants to be the next Amber Rose because no hair is becoming one of the fastest trends in hair history. Ironically.

Artist Spotlight: I.V.

Wes “I.V.” Scott pays homage to his roots through his raspy tracks and dialect on his latest release “Album Practice” a mixtape hosted by DJ Young Breezye and DJ Prez that has been gaining a buzz in the South. Taking on dual duties as both rapper and producer I.V. is poised that it’s his turn in the industry. He started working with music when he was about 14. Started rapping first, then took a break from it for a long time to engineer studio sessions and produce tracks for others. He never gave up writing because it fueled his passion and was a release from the everyday struggles of the world. When asked what are the advantages of being both the rapper and producer, I.V. stated, “it gives me total artistic control doing both, and it puts me on my own timeline for music creation. I can produce a track, save it, and come back to it whenever I want. Lately, I’ve just been producing the tracks as I write the song.”

New Age asked I.V. what his outlook on mixtapes were he claimed, “It’s a love/hate thing, I love the avenue because of the exposure. It has helped me and a few other artists I work with closely to get the brand of music we produce out there. It has also hipped me to artists I wouldn't have heard otherwise, that put out quality music consistently. I hate it in the fact that some people just put out stuff without even considering the quality of music on the tapes versus the number of tapes they drop.” I.V. stays hungry by recording and producing tracks every day in his home studio. The ability for artist to record and produce their own music has changed the way we listen and discover new music. The industry is so accustomed to the standard that when artist like I.V. come along creating a new avenue the executives at labels don’t have the solution which can mangle the A&R formula. When asked what type of success he was looking for in the industry he claimed, both the indie and mainstream scene has pros and cons. “I believe the indie scene would provide the freedom of creativity I enjoy, but the mainstream would allow wider exposure. I wish I could combine the two and get the mainstream budgets with indie creative freedom.”

Some of IV biggest music influences can be attributed to his environment, growing up in Memphis, TN. I.V. was exposed to everything from blues to UGK and 8 ball and MJG. “They really showed me that I can keep my southern identity and do music that’s true to myself.” He credits Nas, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Black Thought for their lyrical ability and simply describes his style of music as what “feels right”. “I like creating music that people will sit down and listen to, or just drive and vibe to. I'm all about track selection and lyrical content. I just like making great quality songs.” The future is looking bright for I.V. who is partners with fellow rapper MT the Great, “We have some things in the works on the indie front that really will be DOPE in every sense of the word.”

Introducing Kidd Russell

Kidd Russell's music and name is sure to be in every household like a flat screen TV before the year is out. Perseverance, pure talent, and faith are sure to get this small town rapper with a sharp tongue to the top. Kidd Russell grew up in the sleepy town of Riverwoods, Illinois But growing up; his favorite music was harsh, urban hip-hop. Call it a small miracle but Kidd got his start writing after an unlucky break when he suffered an injury in high school. After junior college in Philly, Kidd left for California where his first hip-hop endeavors began in a radio production class. He wrote a theme song for a Powder Puff Girls Football team and after seeing how the girls and the students reacted to it, he was hooked. Kidd knew from then on, he wanted to become a song writer and performer. He then made a risky move by leaving school with only seven classes left to pursue a career in music. Kidd Russell never gave up and returned to Chicago where he enlisted help from a team of industry insiders and released his first solo album in 2006 called "Untied" and gained local and regional success opening up for acts like Common, The Roots, The Flobots and many more. Personal and creative differences with his team couldn’t hold him back he channeled his frustration and wrote his biggest single to date, “Dear Shooter”. His follow up single, "Rush" was picked up by 3 TV shows. In the midst of his success Kidd was faced with personal issues and misfortunes that could have very easily prevented him from continuing his craft. Fortunately his two new singles kept finding their own successes, carrying him through the dark ages in which he had little, if no resources, to continue making music. After a few struggles faith would have it that Kidd would be introduced to a producer, Matt Jenkins and Junkyard productions was born. The newly duo began to write and produce songs and finally the music and Kidd was getting the recognition that he dreamt of. In 2009, six songs were placed on TV including MTV, WB, HD.net, Fox Sports and more. They have created several wildly successful theme songs for professional wrestlers that are heard around the world. Their single "Rush: Rock Remix" was chosen for the TV theme song for Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet. This year Kidd Russell is set to release a new mixtape called RUDY RUTIGER MUSIC and his First full length album on JunkYard Productions title "BACKYARD HERO's is set for a March release. New Age was honored to get a one-on-one interview with Kidd Russell as he self-promotes his upcoming album:

New Age: What are some things that you have had to sacrifice to get into the industry?

Kidd: think it would be easier or it would be a shorter list to know what I haven't sacrificed. The life of an indie musician is hard and complicated. Every day you sacrifice time in your relationships, sleep, money and more. At this stage in my career I am the only person who is willing to invest this much in my dream. Its been worth it and the 14hour days marketing and promoting have paid off. I guess it’s like starting any business from scratch you have to put in the work and Time because without that effort you might as well not make music.

New Age: What are the advantages of making moves in the industry as an independent artist?

Kidd:The advantages are freedom to make your own decisions. The majors try to control buzz, release dates and everything which sometimes slows down what is organically happening in the streets. They only do that for monetary reasons. So the advantage to being indie is freedom to do what’s right for the fans and not what’s right for your label making money. Music is a service to people it gives them escape, happiness and brings people together.

New Age:What is your opinion on the industry's current state?

Kidd: I think I've figured out the new business model of the music industry. I can't explain it fully because it wouldn't be wise to give away my secrets. But I will say the mistake major labels make is that they try to make one big wave and ride it out. My philosophy is to find all the boats in the ocean making waves and ride with them because their waves are constant! I know stupid metaphor but it makes sense to me. I think the industry is a great place and it’s exciting because how fast and easy you can get music to listeners. You just have to be smarter about how to make money.

New Age:What is the best way to describe your music?

Kidd: I like to say it sounds like the Midwest, fall leaves, flannels, hoodies, love, football, friends and hard times rapped or sang over original reggae, rock, hip hop and occasional rockabilly beats. Or to put it simple my producer Matt Jenkins and I say we are the Ween of hip hop.

New Age: If you could collab with any mainstream artist whom would it be and why?

Kidd: Common he's been my idol for years. After that the rest would just be icing on the cake. If I could collab in another way it would be Zoe Salanda ;)!

New Age:What is the most important element in the TEAM you speak about in your bio? i.e. manager, producer

Kidd: My producer Matt Jenkins is the most important member of my team without him the rest of the people on my team wouldn't exist . Music comes first the rest is just getting it out there.

*Kidd has opened for: The Roots (twice), The Flobots (twice), Mr. lif (twice), Common, Uncle Cracker, Mickey Avalon, G Love and the Special Sauce, N.A.S.A., Glacier Hiking etc...

Q&A with WanderingStar Management

Name, Age, Birthplace:

Traci Crews, 29, Cincinnati, OH

Modestly dubbed the “Queen of Nashville” Traci Crews is an entrepreneur and educated music junkie who has started her own music development/artist management company in Nashville, TN. New Age caught up with Traci to ask her a few questions about her roots, goals and views on the music industry state of mind.

New Age: What is your music background experience?

Traci: “Of course everybody has that same story where their parents played all the records growing up and all that. Well, mine is the same but I liked to tape the radio with My First Sony tape recorder. I always bought blank tapes to tape the songs off the radio to make my own mixtape of songs I liked to listen to. Music got me through a lot growing up, took me away from what was going on in my house. I could just pop in a tape and sing all the songs and rap all the lyrics. That's how I knew music was aesthetic just by helping me. My music background experience comes from being in the 5th grade starting out playing trumpet for band and ending high school playing marching baritone. After high school I came to Tennessee State as a mechanical engineering major and left after a year to pursue Audio Engineering at Middle Tennessee State. During that transition I was under Def Jam Records street team, interning in promotions at 92Q and volunteering at various music conferences that came to Nashville. After graduating from MTSU I engineered for about 5 years with signed and unsigned artists.

New Age: When and why did you start Wandering Star Management?

Traci: “I started WanderingStar Management in 2007 mainly because I knew a lot of talented people that didn't have a clue as to what direction they wanted to take their music in. Basically, they held the talent but didn't have the business end to make their talent profitable. Hence the meaning of the name WanderingStar, a talented person who is wandering about.”

NewAge: What is the most single most important advice that you would give to an artist on your roster?

Traci: “The single most important advice I'd give an artist on my roster is if you think you are worth it you need to find out how to exploit yourself to the fullest first before someone tries to come with a contract some money telling you they can do it for you because all they see is a cash cow in you and if you don't see the cash cow in yourself then you will get used until you cannot get used anymore and therefore you will be tossed to the side. KNOW YOUR WORTH.”

New Age: What type of artist would you like to work with?

Traci: “I’d like to first work with artists that have much talent. Talent to me comes first because no one wants to work with a talentless individual. That's not what drives my passion for music. Secondly they have to have a drive, a grind and a hustle to get to whatever goal they're trying to obtain. You have to want to work for yourself before any one manager is going to want to work for you.”

New Age: Current artist roster and things to look forward to at Wandering Star?

Traci: “WanderingStar Management current roster is FinessDaBoss and Diablo. I was under contract with Diablo from 2008-2010 as we are currently renegotiating contracts. FinessDaBoss is my new artist just acquired her in late 2009.This year I plan to brand WanderingStar, I will be more visible as I am continuing to build my company.”

“The world of music is constantly changing and we have to be able to help change it for the better or just be the one running behind those trendsetting and innovating.”- Traci Crews

K'Jon: Next to Blow

The Detroit native got his start in 2003 when he recorded a demo and distributed it locally.  The demo found its way to New York, and after writing for a number of under-the-radar artists in the Big Apple, K'Jon got his first major placement in 2004-on the "2 Fast 2 Furious" soundtrack. He hoped that would open some doors. "But it wasn't happening," he says. "I wasn't moving as an artist or as a songwriter." Before K’Jon got his big break in the industry he was making strides in the corporate world after being fired he dedicated his full attention to his craft. Four years later-after self-releasing an album-K'Jon found himself frustrated with his singing career. It seems like many artist face the up and down spiral of the music industry before they really get the break they need and that’s when “On the Ocean” came to him. After writing the heartfelt lyrics over the warm, piano-based beat created by his production team, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, K'Jon began working the record independently and started receiving a positive response from Michigan radio stations. Labels always come running when they get word of a new talent that can achieve spins and sales independently. After getting the call from Universal Republic, he signed a deal months later. In 2009 “On the Ocean” peaked at #12 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Since signing with Universal Republic K’Jon has released his debut album “I Get Around” which has sold 135,000 copies in the United States. 2010 is looking very promising for K’Jon who will continue to work on his craft of songwriting while promoting his album across the country.
